What is DC Power Supply?

A DC power supply is an electrical device that supplies electric energy to an electrical object. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy into another: converting household alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). Application power supply units are also known as external power supply or UPS.

In early times, most electronic equipments was all connected to mains voltage, and the user simply requested, to "Turn on the radio" however, with the advent of portable computers and monitors, manufacturers started putting batteries in equipment and then, later on, realized that these batteries were not good enough to power their devices for long periods. Hence, they added a separate battery pack which would charge when connected via USB. These became quite popular, and now almost every single computer brand will include such a USB port so that users can easily recharge their laptops whenever they are not using them but what happens when you need an adapter that converts 5v dc power to 120v ac.

What are the Types of DC Power Supply?

Read all the types of power supply tools to buy the right one as per the requirement:

Extech DC Power Supply

The Extech DC Power Supply is a triple output benchtop power supply. The DC power supply is equipped with constant current and constant voltage modes for testing and troubleshooting a wide range of electronics devices. The DC power products have been designed for precision and accuracy with low noise, low ripple and high stability, and fast transient response. The meter features two voltage measurement ranges, including ACR (constant current range) and CVR (constant voltage range).

DC Power Supply - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Where is DC power still used?

Indeed our electricity is still predominantly powered by alternating current, but computers, LEDs, solar cells and electric vehicles all run on DC power.

2. Is there an example of a DC power source?

A DC power source contains two terminals that are connected to a circuit while supplying the electric power. It share a potential difference, or voltage, across these terminals. The most common type of DC power source is a battery, like the batteries in laptops and cell phones.

3. Why do most electronics use DC?

DC is much easier to control, accurate and easier to propagate than DC signal. If we use AC in most of the electronic circuits instead of DC, It will create extra work for just handling the phase-shift between signals. It will be harder to supply them with batteries.

4. Why do appliances use DC?

Electronics do not rely to run directly on AC; it needs to be rectified and filtered to provide a smooth DC to power the electronic circuitry within the device with a constant voltage.
