Electric Die Grinder
A die grinder is a handheld power tool used for grinding, sanding, honing, polishing of mostly cylindrical shaped materials made up of metal or even wood and plastic. It’s usually pneumatically driven but electric and shaft driven die grinders are also available. Though CNC machines are now being used extensively for die and related contouring work, die grinders are still very common since they are used in various cutting needs where you require more manual contouring, fabrication work related to welding, boilers, ironworkers and other such works. That’s the reason why die grinders are often used for engraving, cylinder head porting, and general shaping. Their main function is to smoothen the surfaces of materials for their use.
Types of Die Grinders
There are various types of grinders available in the market including small handheld and portable die grinders, fixed, bench-top grinders. Their size and design is in relation to their functions and that’s why different grinders are used for different needs. Broadly speaking, grinders are of two types- pneumatic powered and electric powered. The most common examples of these grinders are bench grinders and angle grinders.
These are large-sized grinders used for sharpening hand tools, cutters, blades etc. As their name suggests, these grinders are stationary machines which are fixed to a work bench. Being large, they require heavy motors of 1-3 horsepower to operate and mostly used for working with harder materials such as tungsten and carbide. The diameter of the wheel of these grinders is often in the range of 6 to 10 inches depending upon the function of the grinder.
Straight or Angle Grinders
Most of the angle/straight grinders make use of compressed air and are pneumatic tools. These grinders, fairly small in comparison to bench grinders, are mostly hand held portable tools which are easy to work with. These grinders come with wheels which are often used to work on pieces which are large enough for a bench. Being small in size, they come with relatively small motors of 0.4 to 15 amps and have a speed of 4000 to 11,000 RPM, which in some cases can be adjusted according to the requirement of the function being carried out. A lower speed provides a better polishing job whereas a higher speed is helpful for creating a rough texture on the surface. Care must be taken while using the grinder in heavy use situation that may warrant the use of higher amp motor instead of a lower amp motor so that grinding doesn’t get slowed down in the middle.
Some of the common types of die grinders available in the market are- Air Grinders, Air Die Grinders, Micro Die Grinders, Angle Die Grinders, Compressed Air Die Grinders, Mini Die Grinders, Mini/Micro Grinders, Extended Die Grinders, Air Angle Die Grinders, Air Die Grinders with KIT, Angle Die Grinder Kit, Heavy Duty Pneumatic Rod Grinders, Straight Grinders, etc. These are available as per their model no., part no. and various other features such as air pressure, speed, size, power, diameter etc. Some of the popular brands in die grinders offering above mentioned types of die grinders include ELGI, Unoair, Miranda, Con Air, Blue Point Snap On, Techno, R-Y, Metabo, Cargo, CAT AIR TOOLS, Nityo, Maktec, Chicago Pneumatic, Hi-Mezar, Power Tec, Teryair, Wuerth.
