What is a Lubricant?

Many different substances can be used as lubricants. The most common lubricants are Oil and Grease. Grease is composed of an oil and a thickening agent, while the oils are actually lubricating. Lubricants that contain oil have additives to enhance, add or suppress the properties. The amount of additives depends on the type of oil and its application.

For instance, engine oils might have a dispersant added. A dispersant keeps insoluble matter conglomerated together to be removed by the filter upon the circulation. In environments that undergo extremes in temperature, from cold to hot, a viscosity index (VI) improver may be added.

These additives are long organic molecules that stay bunched together in cold conditions and unravel in hotter environments. This process changes the oil’s viscosity and allows it to flow better in cold conditions while still maintaining its high-temperature properties.

Tips to buy the right lubricant

As mentioned above, there are many types of lubricants and Oil. Automobile Oil & Lubricants are appropriate for automobiles such as engine oil or brake oil which have specific additives to cater to the engine performance and on the other hand, you can find many types of Grease which are used to reduce friction among the machine components.

Before you go out to buy Lubricant or Oil, it is necessary that you are aware of different types of Lubricants in the market so as to make a wise buying decision. Here are the types of Lubricants available on the market:-

#1)Oils

Oils are liquids made of long polymer chains, with additives for different properties. Three main common additives are – Antioxidants, Corrosion inhibitors and detergents. Antioxidants keeps the oil from oxidizing, corrosion inhibitors to prevent from corroding, and detergents to prevent forming.

These long chains are hard to squeeze out from surfaces, making oils useful as a slippery barrier between two. Oils come in different “weights” (such as 5W or 10W), which correspond to viscosity. The lower the number, the thinner the oil, and makes it easy to flow.

#2)Grease

Greases are made by using oil (typically mineral oil) and mixing it with thickeners (various types of soaps). Sometimes they may also contain various lubricating particles such as graphite, molybdenum disulfide, PTFE aka Teflon. Greases combine the lubricating properties of oils with added stickiness, allowing the lubricant to stick to the surfaces better.

Greases can even act as a protector, protecting the surfaces from contaminants that can damage the surface. There is one downside to grease because it’s so thick and sticky, sometimes it can cause resistance in small or fast-moving mechanisms.

#3)Penetrating Lubricants

Penetrating lubricants can be a useful asset in many stuck-bolt situations, loosening years of rust in minutes. Penetrating oils are not designed for long-lasting lubrication, as compared to other lubricants. Instead, these are designed to infiltrate the tiny cracks between the surfaces (such as screw threads), add lubrication, and break up rust due to their low viscosity oils with additives.

You can make your own low-cost penetrating oil that outperforms almost all of penetrating oils present in the market. The mixture of vegetable oil and acetone works as well (or better) than WD-40 at loosening the stuck bolt.

#4)Dry Lubricants

Dry lubricants are made up of graphite, silicone, molybdenum disulfide or PTFE. These particles are super slippery at the molecular level, so they work as great lubricant agents between two surfaces and reduce the friction between surfaces in contact with one another.

These lubricants are commonly available in spray form, where they are mixed with some solvent such as water, alcohol, or some other solvent. Once sprayed solvent evaporates leaving behind the thin film of lubricating substance.
