1. Voltage Range: It’s very important to know what voltage range is required. Multiple voltages are required if testing is to be done on a wide range of equipment. Insulation Testers are typically available in 1 kV and 5-kV variants. In general, 1-kV units can handle equipment that runs on 120, 240, or 480 Vac conventional distribution voltages. Utility and heavy industrial applications, on the other hand, require a 5-kV unit. It is not necessary to test equipment working at such high voltages as 13.2 kV at matching voltage. A 5-kV tester can nevertheless provide enough information to service and maintain high-voltage equipment.

 

 2. Measurement Range: Before selecting the Insulation Tester, one should always be familiar with the actual reading that is expected from the installations, even if they are new. A tester with a limited range is short-changing the operator when it comes to capital equipment maintenance. Infinity readings do not reflect genuine data for preventive or predictive maintenance. It gives a good test term but the operator doesn’t know anything else. When the readings have drifted down into the detectable range, the maintenance worker may find themselves with little time to plan standard off-line maintenance. Extended-range testers provide for accurate readings from the moment of installation, resulting in a protracted timeline that allows maintenance employees plenty of breathing room.

 

 3. Power Source: A battery-powered unit is preferred for operating a tester. A hand crank used byonboardd operators remains very popular.  Experienced personnel always prefer a hand crank but it is not convenient in all situations. Moreover, there is no data to prove that the hand crank is rated above battery-powered units.

 

 4. Display: Always examine the display properly. Cheap testers may provide faulty displays which can give wrong results. Accuracy is one of the main features of the Insulation Tester, which should never be compromised.
