KSB Autoboost Controller Centrifugal pumps are sometimes called "centrifugal" or "hydraulic turbines". They are most often used for pumping liquids with low viscosity and for pumping liquids that contain solid particles. The pump is driven by a rotating shaft, which may be integral to the impeller, but often is not. It has a casing around it to protect the internal parts from being damaged by foreign objects in the liquid being pumped and to give a large surface for heat exchange if the liquid being pumped is hot. The centrifugal pump is the most common type in use today. It consists of a rotating impeller mounted on a free-swinging shaft, with a casing at its center. The impeller is driven by an electric motor or internal combustion engine, which rotates the impeller at high speeds. The liquid to be pumped enters the casing through an inlet pipe and moves out through an outlet pipe attached to the casing wall. As the impeller spins, it draws in liquid through the suction side of the pump, accelerates it through the curved vanes, and flings it outward against low-pressure areas on the discharge side of the pump. Centrifugal pumps are the most common type of water pump in use today. They are driven by electric motors, gas engines, or steam turbines. They can pump water from wells, rivers, and other bodies of water. They are also used to supply water to fire hydrants, where they are called submersible pumps. The centrifugal pump is a reciprocating pump that uses the centrifugal force of a rotating impeller to draw liquid into the center of the impeller blades and force it outward toward the discharge nozzle.
