The Earth leakage relay is a device used to monitor leakage current in an electrical installation. It is usually installed in the main switchboard or distribution board of a building, and is designed to disconnect the supply of electricity if it detects a fault condition. This type of relay plays an important role in ensuring the safety of our lives and properties by preventing fires caused by electrical faults. The earth leakage relay was developed as an improvement over the earth fault interrupter (EFI). The EFI was designed to detect earth faults but not other types of electrical fault, such as short circuits between live conductors or between live conductors and earth (ground). To overcome this limitation, an additional device called an arc detector was added to the EFI. The arc detector could detect arcing faults which were not detected by the EFI alone. The arc detector was based on detecting high voltage pulses from arcing faults, whereas in most cases this voltage would be too low for detection by an EFI alone. However, if these pulses were detected from more than one point on the system (e.g., from two separate phases), then they could be interpreted as being indicative of a serious fault condition requiring intervention by personnel trained in isolating such conditions.
