- Sandpaper sheets come in various grit sizes for different applications and surfaces ranging from fine to coarse.
- The most common uses apart from finishing are to remove the rust layer, reduce one layer of the surface, and remove paint.
- Sandpaper is made of sand-like particles mixed with glue or resin. The sand-like particles are usually silicon carbide or aluminum oxide grains, while the glue or resin is usually cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB).
- The amount of silicon carbide or aluminum oxide per sheet varies depending on the intended use and the manufacturer's specifications. The more silicon carbide or aluminum oxide present, the finer the grit rating becomes: 120 to 220 grit: for rough sanding and removing scratches. 320 to 400 grit: for light sanding between coats of finish, or to sand metal and other hard surfaces. 400 to 800 grit: for final finishing before painting. 1000 to 1500 grit: for sanding between coats. 2000 grit: for buffing.
