Bosch Drill Type Armature

An armature is a fundamental component found in various mechanical systems, particularly in electric motors and generators. It serves as the central component around which electromagnetic coils are wound, generating magnetic fields when electrical current flows through them. This magnetic field interacts with other components, such as stator windings, to produce motion or electrical power.

Typically constructed from a solid or laminated iron core, the armature consists of multiple winding slots where conductive wire is wound. The number of winding slots and the arrangement of coils vary depending on the specific application and design requirements. In some configurations, the armature may also include a commutator, which is a segmented metal ring that helps to control the direction of current flow through the armature coils.

The operation of an armature is based on the principles of electromagnetism. When an electrical current is applied to the armature coils, a magnetic field is generated around the coils due to the flow of electrons. This magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field generated by the stator windings, causing the armature to rotate in an electric motor or inducing an electromotive force in a generator.

In electric motors, the rotation of the armature produces mechanical work by driving connected shafts or gears. Conversely, in generators, the rotation of the armature induces an electrical current in the coils, which can be harnessed as electrical power.
