Short-circuiting occurs when a metallic conductor, such as a bolt or screw, comes into contact with the motor terminals and creates a path for current to flow. The MP detects these conditions and switches off the circuit, preventing damage to the motor from occurring. Relays can be initiated in a variety of ways, but they all provide the same basic protection: when the current flowing through the motor reaches a certain level, the relay senses and responds to that level. The response is usually to divert current flow away from the motor and into an alternate form, such as a heat sink or an overcurrent protector that will disconnect power entirely. This is done to prevent damage to the motor itself. A motor protection relay is a safety device that monitors the current, voltage and frequency of a single-phase AC motor and disconnects the power supply if the current exceeds the upper or lower setpoint. MPRs are especially useful when used on variable frequency drives (VFD) due to their ability to perform soft starts and stopping with variable torque loads. While they can be used anywhere a motor is used, they are commonly found on pumps and heating/cooling systems.
