Honeywell Impact 6 A Bell Push Switch
- A switch is a device that controls the flow of current in an electric circuit by making contact between adjacent conductors. Switches may be manually operated by a human operator, actuated by mechanical, electro-mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic means or driven by changes in some electrical property such as voltage or inductance. A switch that is operated by a person is often called a manual switch. Switches may be permanently attached to a circuit (as in the case of normal light switches) or they may be removable and portable (as in the case of a push-button switch mounted on a machine).
- Most switches are made from plastic or metal but can range from glass and even fabric for special applications. There are many types of switches all designed for different purposes. A switch may control power to a circuit, turn on and off lights or electrical equipment, allow remote control of equipment, signal when an event has occurred etc.
- The simplest form of switch consists of a mechanical lever or knob attached to a spring-loaded metal contact. When the lever is flipped to one side, this contact makes or breaks an electrical connection. The other common type of switch uses two metals separated by an insulating material (called a dielectric). When enough voltage is applied across these two metals, they become electrically conductive and pass current through them.
