The Megger MIT430 is a battery insulation tester that allows technicians to quickly and accurately test the integrity of a battery's insulation system. The unit tests the continuity of the battery's case, the presence of any cracks in the case, and any pinhole-sized openings that may be caused by corrosion or physical damage. Its test leads are made of polypropylene, and its handle and plugs are constructed of ABS plastic. The range can be switched between 200Ω and 4000Ω using a switch on the back of the unit. The instrument measures approximately 4½" x 2¾" x 1½". The case is made from ABS plastic and has a rubber boot for protection against water to IP65 standard (the unit will survive brief immersion in water).

It can test the integrity of two- or three-terminal batteries, including alkaline, carbon zinc, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lead acid, and lithium ion/polymer. The analyzer features an easy-to-use interface with LED indicators for pass/fail testing of up to 8 batteries per second. The base unit contains the main electronics and display and houses a rechargeable battery pack used to power the battery under test. The probe contains all of the electronics needed to connect to the battery being tested and also includes two banana plugs for connection to external power sources.

It applies a low voltage to the test terminal and monitors the voltage drop across the internal resistance of the battery. The resulting voltage drop is directly proportional to the internal impedance and gives a close approximation to the remaining capacity of most batteries.
