What Is a Microscope?

microscope is a device that is used to see objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye closely.  It mainly consists of an objective lens, ocular lens, lens tube, stage, and a reflector.

Points to consider while purchasing the right Microscope

1)The Light Source

Optimum performance of a highly resolving objective depends upon  optimum illumination. The field of view must be evenly filled with bright light sufficient for photography.

2)The Eyepiece

The eyepiece is used to observe your object. Depending on the requirement, the eyepiece may be permanently mounted or removable, with a fixed or a variable magnification. This is where the compound comes in: the magnification of the eyepiece multiplied by the magnification of the objective of microscope which gives us the total magnification.

So, a 20x eyepiece looking through the objectives above can give magnification 100x, 200x, and 500x respectively. If your preferred model has easy to change eyepieces, you can easily magnify your specimen.

3)The Focus System

The focus system totally depends upon the individual device. Generally, it will be a rack-and-pinion style with a knob that you move to focus your object. In some cases, some models will have focusing knobs on either side of the arm to move it in left or right side as per your requirement.

4)The Body

The body is the structure to which all the different parts are attached. The base should be wide to provide a strong footprint, usually with non-slip rubber feet to provide the grip. From the back side of the base there will be a curved part called the arm.

There are stages attached to it with the focusing mechanism. In some higher price models there is a swivel system which enables the head to move left and right for easier viewing purposes.

Objective Lenses and Nosepiece

The Objective Lens is the that part of the microscope where the entire magnification process starts. In most of the microscopes, there are different objectives that offer different magnifications—for example 10x, 40x, and 1000x.

The different lenses are mounted onto the turret. The nosepiece moves which allows the user to gradually shift from one level to the next level of magnification. Generally, there will be a click-stop to fix the object in the correct orientation.

Types  of MicroScopes

Microscopes come in various categories i.e. monocular, binocular, lab microscope, compound microscope, etc. so it is important to know what type of microscope you are specifically looking for before buying a microscope.

Various Applications of Microscope

  1. The main application of microscopes is scientific research. It allows us to see things we could never see before.
  2. You can do a DNA analysis.
  3. We use them in biology to study cells (optical/light microscopes), develop nanotechnology like carbon nanotubes, etc.
  4. Used in creating tiny circuits that are not easily visible to the naked eyes.
