What are Taper Roller Bearings (TRB)?

These bearing are particularly used for applications where there are combined radial (thrust loads) and axial loads. These bearings are often used in pairs.

Construction of a Taper Roller Bearings (TRB)

A Taper Roller Bearing is essentially made up of following components-

  1. Inner Raceway (Tapered)
  2. Outer Raceway (tapered)
  3. Tapered Rollers
  4. Cage- To hold the rollers in position

The raceways and the rollers are tapered so that the conical surfaces of these components when projected meet at a common point, which makes the motion of the cones co-axial, preventing sliding motion between raceways and the rollers.

The conical geometry also leads to a line contact which results in higher load carrying capacity as against the DGBB- where there is a point contact only.

Factors affecting the Taper Roller Bearings (TRB) performance

  1. Roller end and flange contact area
  2. Raceway Profiles
  3. Profile Consistency and roller size
  4. Running –in: This refers to the increase in the temperature due to friction and resulting into wear. Bearings should be properly lubricated and mounted

The inner raceway along with rolling elements forms a unit, which can be mounted separately on outer race.

Applications of Taper Roller Bearings (TRB)

TRB find applications in case of moderated speeds and heavy-duty applications:

  • Automotive industry- 2 wheeler and 4 wheelers: to counter both radial and axial loads
  • Agriculture
  • Construction and Mining Equipment
  • Axle systems
  • Gear box
  • Differential
  • Railroad Axle-Box
  • Wind Turbines

Types of TRB

  1. Single row TRB
  2. Double row TRB
  3. Four row TRB

TRB Material and Bearing Sizes

Generally, tapered roller bearings are made of high carbon chrome steel to live up to their expected performance. Most standard industrial sizes are generally available in inch and metric. The main stock sizes available are: ID 15-240mm or .59- 9.45 inches to OD 35-40mm or 1.38-15.75 inches. Industrybuying has a vast stock of TRBs from top brands like NTN, FAG, KOYA, etc.

Also, they are available in different varieties like Single Row Tapered Roller Bearing, inner ring, needle roller bearings and Single Row Radial Tapered Roller Bearing. Single row tapered roller bearings can easily be separated, meaning that the inner ring with roller and cage assembly can be mounted separately from the outer ring.
