Fire Resistant Safes
Fire Resistant safes
A safe is a durable box that can be locked to secure one’s valuable possessions and protect them from being stolen or from being burnt in the event of a fire. A safe may have either a completely detachable face or a hinged door to allow easy access to the products kept inside it. A fire resistant safe, better known to some as a fireproof safe or a fire liner safe, is a popular type of safe used in homes, workplaces and a lot of other settings to safeguard important documents and valuables from being charred and subsequently destroyed in fires. A fire resistant safe must be used to safeguard a wide range of important assets—from insurance policies, passports and birth certificates of all family members, digital backups of photographs taken in compact discs, hard drives and pen drives, keys to bank lockers, copies of living wills and family wills and papers pertaining to retirement plans and various bank accounts.
How Does It Work?
A fire resistant safe of good quality has got two layers of sheet metal which enclose a concrete and vermiculite based water-retaining medium. The frame of the safe door is affixed with a heat seal. In the event of a fire, as soon as the heat comes in contact with the safe, the water retained by the fire retardant medium is expelled as steam. The expelled steam, in return, artificially raises the flash point; simultaneously, the increase in temperature leads to the formation of a solid seal around the convoluted frame of the safe door. This seal is what ultimately provides protection against the fire.
What Is An Ideal Fire Resistant Safe?
A lot of considerations need to be made before selecting the ideal fire resistant safe. First and foremost, all the items that need to be put inside the safe must be enlisted so as to get a rough estimate of the space they would be occupying. Also, the total space available for the safe should also be considered. Depending on that, the size of the fire resistant safe should be decided upon. Most safes are either adept at providing protection against fires or adept at providing protection against thefts and burglaries. The ideal safe would have a minimum of B burglary rating and a fire cladding of two-and-a-half-inch concrete amalgamate. The fire rating of a safe is defined as the number of hours it can resist flame before succumbing. Another key component integral to the fire rating of a safe is its door fire seal. Fire seals on safe doors are important not only for fire protection but also for keeping water, humidity or moisture from dampening any papers inside the safe.
